Surveys and Other Methods in Action Research
https://hdl.handle.net/10680/1987
Surveys and Other Methods in Action Research Buckland, Jerry This session presented by Dr. Jerry Buckland focused on providing insight into how to conduct action-oriented research (ARM) and surveys. It looked at how ARM is an approach to research that seeks to inform effective action. This approach then aligns well with the needs of organizations seeking to better understand 1) the needs and assets of their client communities, and 2) the impact of their programs on these communities. The session looked at how ARM is pragmatic, relies on mixed methods, offers important benefits, but has limitations.

https://hdl.handle.net/10680/1959
Qualitative Interviewing and Transcription: The Things We Wish We Knew Before We Started! Dengate, Jennifer; Cooper, Sarah It’s just a conversation, right? Wrong. An interview is SO much more… In this hands-on workshop, two experienced interviewers from city planning and sociology will highlight the practical skills that are needed to conduct and transcribe interviews, including an introduction to qualitative data analysis. Sarah and Jen will discuss all of the things that they wish they would have known before sitting down to interview members of different communities and share stories from interviews they have conducted to help you understand what to expect. They will also share tips for transcribing and analyzing interview data. In this session, you will also have the chance to try interviewing for yourself, analyze a bit of interview data, and hear what supervisors will be looking for from their assistants.

Community-Based Research and Ethics: From Ethics Forms to Honouring Relations
https://hdl.handle.net/10680/1940
Community-Based Research and Ethics: From Ethics Forms to Honouring Relations Kerr, Jeannie What is ethical in research and what are our responsibilities as researchers? Unless you have designed a research project and completed ethics requirements yourself it may be difficult to know how the process works, especially in community-based research. As a Research Assistant on a project, you might not know what your own responsibilities are and why it might even matter to you. In this session, we will consider the ethical responsibilities of the research team when participating in community-based research projects. You’ll see the big picture of the ethics requirements in research in Canada linked to Universities and communities. Through working through a case-study, we will think more specifically about what it means to recognize and honour our ethical responsibilities to research participants as a research team member.
